GEAR-UP is a national initiative through the U.S. Department of Education to encourage more young people to have high expectations, stay in school, study hard and take challenging courses to prepare for post secondary opportunities.

Mission:
The mission of the GEAR UP program is to significantly INCREASE the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. In our grant application, we agreed to provide tutoring and mentoring opportunities as part of our student support activities.

 

Goals and Objectives for the Gear-UP Program

Goal 1:

 

Increase the academic performance and preparation for postsecondary education for Gear Up students
Objective 1
Increase the number of students enrolled in advance placement (AP) and Pre-AP, or other
advanced level course options by at least 20%.
Objective 2
Increase the number of minority students and low socio-economic students who are enrolled in the pre-AP, AP, or other advanced level courses by 20 %.
Objective 3
Increase the number of students passing AP exams with high scores by 15 %.
Objective 4
Increase the number of students taking algebra in 9th grade in relationship to the grade level student population by 20 %
Objective 5
Increase the number of students taking geometry in 10th grade in relationship to the grade-level student population by 20%.

Goal 2:     
           
           

 
Increase the rate of high school graduation and participation in postsecondary education for Gear Up students.
Objective 6 -
Decrease the gap between the number of students enrolled in the beginning cohort and the number completing the requirements of the graduation plan on time by 10%.
Objective 7
Increase the percentage of students with fewer than 5 unexcused absences in the first two quarters by 10 %.
Objective 8
Increase the number of students completing the Distinguished Achievement Program ( DAP) high school graduation plan by at least 10%.

Goal 3: 

 

 
Increase Gear Up educational expectations of Gear Up students and student and family knowledge of post-secondary education options, preparation and financing.

Objective 9
Increase parents’ knowledge of the importance of students’ selection of challenging courses and sources for financial aid for college by 25% as measured by a survey of parents of 7th grade students in 2006 and 12th grade students in 2011.
